SIMONE SHUBUCK
“Drawings and Wrapping Service”

Kantor / Feuer gallery is pleased to announce the first Los Angeles solo exhibition for New York-based artist Simone Shubuck. The exhibition consists of 25 drawings, comprising two bodies of work. One group reflects the evolution of Shubuck’s distinctive visual style, where she layers flowers, birds, dripping jeweled chains, daggers and other objects, adorning them with a range of pop-culture references, from Don Diva magazine to necklaces from the Italian fashion house Marni. The other group of drawings consists of a series of strange and beautiful women. They are envisioned by Shubuck as the kind of creatures who might inhabit the spaces in her other works. While some of them offer a direct hat tip to Egon Schiele’s erotic female figures, others exist as an odd combination of unlikely beauty and desire as filtered through the eyes of a young woman in conflict with fashion and consumer culture.

On Saturday, December 17, Shubuck will host a special one-day event during gallery hours. The artist will offer a gift-wrapping service in a style related to her drawings by using distinctive papers, vintage ribbons, cut-out letters, and some intricate hand drawn elements. Appointments are recommended and there is a fee of $40 per present.

Shubuck’s work is informed by a range of experiences, from her days as a graffiti artist in San Francisco in the early 90’s to her years as a flower designer in New York City. She professes an affinity for Viennese Secessionists and Art Nouveau practices as well as the work of such outsider artists as Edmund Monsieul and Lee Godie. Her visual style parallels her obsession with the layered sampling of hip-hop artists like Jay-Z, Dipset, Cam’ron and Young Jeezy. Another notable influence comes from her maternal grandmother and great-grandmother, who were skilled bakers and embroiderers.

Born in 1969, Simone Shubuck received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has had a solo exhibition with Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL) in New York and has exhibited works in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and San Francisco. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Tokion, Elle, The Fader, ARTnews and is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
