New Paintings

Kantor Gallery is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by New York based artist James Goss presented this July.

‘I’ve lived in the Champlain Valley located in the northern Adirondacks of New York State for over 30 years. About 10 years ago I bought a home across the street from the lake. The lake, lake Champlain has become an endless source of beauty for me. It’s ever changing appearance all driven by light or the lack of continues to draw me in.

The White Boat series began in April 2018. I had stored many images in my mind .I had purchased a boat and began to explore parts of the lake impossible to see from the shores of the village I live in. The Palisades or Split Rock is the deepest part of the lake with dramatic rock and foliage cliffs. Very dramatic, ancient and somewhat mysterious. It became a favorite spot for me to motor to and admire at various times of the day.

This specific location became the site and springboard for the earliest White Boat composition. I did maybe the first 50 or so on paper. Later the White boat traveled to other parts of the lake, various coves and bays. The paintings depict the white boat among these settings. The paintings represent a journey through life. Through light and dark. The endless perseverance of truth and beauty. We are alone in the world at times. A lone self. The lone boat as metaphor for my own journey.

The lake changes yet stays the same. People have asked me why blue, why so much blue. I have responded the sky is blue the lake is blue.’
